The Anglo-Saxons were a group of people who were descents from the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes. Around AD 410, They came from Germany to help England fend off the Picts and the Scotti. They left because they had to go back Scottland to defend their country. The Anglo-Saxons ended up invading Southern and Eastern Britain. This era lasted from the 5th century all the way to the Norman Conquest (“The Anglo-Saxons”) (“Anglo-Saxon”).
The Anglo-Saxons had originally had their own religion. This changed when Saint Augustine arrived. He converted most of the people to Christianity (“Anglo-Saxon”). Before the conversion, they drove most of the native English people out of the country and replaced their houses with buildings of their own. They also brought their own language. This language is what we now call Old English. Overtime, the term Anglo-Saxon turned into English (“Anglo-Saxon” 464) (Fuller 23) (“The Anglo-Saxons”) (“Anglo-Saxon”).
Before, the invasion, there were small tribes. However, the Anglo-Saxons split the country into four kingdoms. The kingdoms were Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia and Wessex. Later, the vikings invaded. Wessex survived the viking invasions but the other kingdoms did not. This is because the leader of the Wessex army killed the Viking ruler of York. This caused all of England to be unified by King Ered. However, They weren’t officially unified until the 9th century (“Anglo-Saxon”) (“The Anglo-Saxons”).
The Anglo-Saxon invasion lasted from 410 to 1066. It ended when Edward the Confessor died. Harold Godwinson was soon crowned but failed to defend his position. The Normans defeated Harold during the Battle of Hastings. This caused the Anglo-Saxon era to end (“The Anglo-Saxons”).
